Welcome to our preschool! I'm going to walk you through a typical day here at Peak. After 10 years at our Enumclaw location, we will have our first day at the NEW Buckley location. Each parent will have a specified drop-off time. You will walk your child in, and sign the welcome sheet. Which, is an agreement that your student and everyone they have been in contact with for the last 48 hours are healthy with no fever or symptoms. Your student then does their morning job, which includes hanging up their coat, finding their name, answering the question of the day then putting a sticker on their attendance chart.
These activities also help them with name recognition. Then they have a few minutes of group play till we begin with our opening. The opening always starts with the pledge of allegiance, letter of the week alphabet song, sung in English and sign language, calendar counting in English and Spanish, songs, dance, weather, season, and colors in English and Spanish. The students take turns helping with the morning opening routine.
After the morning opening, we go to the table for writing practice.
The students will start with the letter of the week and then practice writing their names. We then break for more playtime, where the students are brought over to the tables to do projects of the day. They get individual teaching at this time. They learn to leave their play to do work and then return to play. We focus on learning to handle scissors properly, painting, coloring, and many arts and crafts. We even work with clay. We have a kiln and try to incorporate a clay project with every theme or holiday.
We focus on number writing and the value of numbers, letter-sound recognition, and writing. These are all necessary pre-reading and pre-math skills to prepare them for future kindergarten success.
It's then time for half the class to go to the gym for 30 minutes of active movement. Gym time is a structured class teaching balance, strength , and a love for being active.
Our pre-gym skills curriculum is geared for all students to learn how strong, capable, and amazing their bodies are. Physical development builds body awareness and confidence, teaching them to be active and healthy early in their lives.
During this time, the other half of the class is working on another project, then having snack time. Then the two groups switch. Each student gets equal gym, snack, and project time. Every week, we introduce a new letter and each month has a different theme. This helps establish a hook in their brain for these subjects. When they learn more later on in their school career the hooks are primed and ready to absorb more information.
We end our day with show 'N tell. Girls are on Monday's and Tuesday's. The boys are on Wednesday's and Thursday's. Friday is for both girls and boys. Show 'N Tell develops an ability to feel comfortable speaking in front of their classmates. At the end of the day, parents will park and pick up their kids at the scheduled time.
We follow the same basic daily schedule. This schedule quickly allows students to feel comfortable and secure in their preschool environment as they know what to expect.
